Mental Health First Aid
“I know they’re struggling but I’m scared to say something”.
How many times have you said or heard this when concerned about someone’s mental health? This can bring up very real fears for most people! The last thing you want to do is say the “wrong thing” or push someone away. We aren’t taught how to ask questions about mental health or get people to the resources they need, yet 1 in 5 Americans suffer from mental illness.
So what is Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)?
MHFA is a one day course anyone over the age of 18 can take.
Just like a CPR or First Aid course teaches how to save a life in a medical crisis, MHFA teaches how to respond in a mental health or substance use crisis. It is an evidence-based program used worldwide, currently managed by the National Council on Behavioral Health.
After this training participants will be able to:
Name signs and symptoms of common mental health disorders
Notice warning signs and risk factors of a developing mental health crisis to offer early intervention and resources
Enact a 5-step action plan to help loved ones, colleagues, neighbors and others cope with mental health or substance use problems.
Be a bridge to appropriate professional or self help for those who may be fearful of stigma or lack personal resources
MHFA is for everyone, however some common settings are schools, non profit organizations, corporations, HR departments, faith communities, parent groups and healthcare workers.
I am a certified instructor for both Youth and Adult Mental Health First Aid. The youth training is designed for adults working and supporting youth.
How to get started
MHFA can be delivered virtually or in person. This means I can offer this training anywhere in the world! There is a hybrid option which includes two hours of individual pre work and six hours of instruction. The full in person option is 8 hours, no pre work required. MHFA is designed to teach up to 30 people at a time. My mission is to make this training as accessible as possible to all. Contact abbey@omnicounselingandnutrition.com for information on pricing.
I don’t have any community trainings planned right now. If your organization would like to hire me for a private training reach out for more information!
